And the Winner Is…, 2019-09-09

So, despite the poor cut I enjoyed this immensely. Cake and little old ladies! It took a lot longer than it would have with a better quality puzzle, but I got there in the end.

I also liked the dimensions, it’s not exactly a panorama (which I also like), but most 1000 piece puzzles tend to be about 70 x 50 cm, and this was 76×38 cm.

I especially enjoyed how these two are surreptitiously eyeing the competition 🙂

Summer at the Amusement Park, 2018-08-18

This was my first Galison puzzle, and I loved it! The grid cut is boring, with only two-tabs-opposite pieces, but it doesn’t matter with a 500 piece puzzle, especially with a great image like this.

And the Winner Is…, In Progress

I started on And the Winner Is… The dresses seem to be easiest to pick out, so I started with them.

Unfortunately, the cut isn’t that great. It’s like the blades were dull, and sometimes it makes it difficult to know if a piece belongs or not. Too bad, because the design of the cut is fine, the problem is only in the execution. I’ve done two Sunsout puzzles before, and neither one had this problem.

Wasgij? 1: Sunday Drivers, 2019-09-04

I finally tried a WASGIJ?-puzzle. There are different types, but in this case, the box shows a situation from one perspective and the finished puzzle from another. You can see the finished puzzle by clicking here.

There were hints on the box, but I didn’t really use them. The puzzle was really fun to do, I enjoyed it very much. Also, I really identified with the Sunday driver 🙂

I’ve been avoiding Jumbo puzzles for years because I had problems with pieces fitting where they don’t belong, and that was still an issue. Of course, with an image like this, it’s not much of a problem, but I still wouldn’t want to do a Jumbo with a large area of the same colour.

Helsinki City Puzzle, 2019-09-04

So, I did get the Helsinki version of the City Puzzle series. I did Dortmund earlier. This was much easier than Dortmund, partly because there is quite a lot of water, and also because I know Helsinki much better. I again placed a coin where I live 🙂

Helsinki City Puzzle, Extra Goods, 500 pieces. Completed on September 4th, 2019.

I enjoyed this a lot, but the fit is so tight it’s a bit difficult to take apart. I don’t think it will hold up well to repeat assembly, the quality is not that stellar.

I’ve rarely seen this much of a size difference in pieces from the same puzzle.

The Whitesmith’s Cottage, 2018-09-09

I don’t usually get Falcon puzzles, I once had a horrible experience with a 3000-piece puzzle where any piece would fit anywhere, but this was a gift. It ended up being quite enjoyable, although I could tell that with another image it could have been quite hard. Falcon belongs on the list of brands that I only get if there are no large areas of one colour.

Cruise, 2018-01-16

A great puzzle with a cruise ship by Swedish artist Anders Lyon. Since the artist is Swedish, it is practically certain that this is partly modelled on the ships that sail between Stockholm and Helsinki every night. It would be difficult to find a Finn who was never on one of these, and they’re popular in Sweden as well.  In fact, there was a very popular Swedish drama series set on one such ship in the 90s. The ship in the puzzle is called the M/S Scandalia, and it’s flying the Swedish flag 🙂

Today, I’ll be boarding a ship called M/S Gabriella, and tomorrow me and my car will be back in Helsinki. Notice the cars on the lower levels on Scandalia 🙂

I used a tablet stand to keep the image upright (the image is cut from the box, I don’t keep triangular boxes).

The text on the doctor’s wall reads “If you can read this you can see pretty well and don’t have to get new glasses” in Swedish.

There is also a Finnish sauna.

I loved this puzzle, and look forward to more Anders Lyon images.

Epanouissement coloré, In Progress

I started one more puzzle in Dortmund, where it will be waiting for my return. Today I’m heading back north with my car, and in a few days I should be back in Helsinki. Again, I’ve set it up so that there’s a post with an old puzzle photo every day.

This is an interesting image, but the red part is going to be tough. The title is given in French only on the box, but Epanouissement coloré should mean Colourful Blossoming (thank you, Google). It’s a 1500-piece Grafika.

On the box, the artists are given as Anne Poiré & Patrick Guallino, but the signature on the image makes it look like one person.
