Surrender, 2023-06-04

I’m back in Helsinki now, but before I left Dortmund, I managed to finish one more puzzle. It’s a nice image by Mordillo, but it’s not a Heye puzzle, but a Clementoni. Up until the artist’s death in 2019, I am only aware of Heye puzzles with images by Mordillo, but since then, Clementoni also has them. This was my first Clementoni with a Mordillo image.

Surrender by Mordillo, Surrender, Clementoni, 500 pieces. Completed on June 4, 2023.

I’ve actually done a very similar image before. There, the animals seem to be angry at person relieving himself against a tree, and here, it’s a hunter. Many of the animals look the same, or at least very similar. This was a fun, and fairly quick puzzle.

[Life Magazine Covers], 2023-05-14

This turned out to be even more fun than expected, I thought having the same word (“LIFE”) in the same font and colours over and over would be annoying, but it really wasn’t. Also, the background red is not always the same, there were variations, but even so, this was a rare case where I didn’t try to do the text first.

There is no title on the box, but all of the images are covers of Life magazine from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Here are some of my favourites:

I loved all of the space themed images (as usual), and the virus was so much fun (as a puzzle!). I was also surprised how much I liked the images with large crowds of people (it says Dodger rookies on this one).

Great puzzle!

Flower House, 2023-04-30

Not my usual style, but I enjoyed it, and the colours are really nice. I have no idea where this puzzle came from – it turned up at my desk in the library, which means a colleague must have brought it in for me, but I have no idea who. Thank you, whoever you are!

Cheshire Cat, 2023-03-20

There is no title on the box for this puzzle, but it’s clearly a version of the Disney Cheshire Cat (and indeed, there is a Disney logo on the box). The cat itself was pretty easy, but the background with the green and red dots took a while to do. Great fun!

The Consecration of Emperor Napoleon, 2023-03-11

It says consecration on the box, but I think the ritual depicted is usually known as a coronation. In the image, Napoleon is just about to place a crown on the head of his wife, Josephine. Behind him is the pope Pius VII. The coronation took place in 1804, but the painting by Napoleon’s favourite artist, Jacques-Louis David, is from a few years later. More on the painting.

As a puzzle, this was nice, and easier than many other historical paintings that I’ve done. I did this for the monthly puzzle challenge in a FB group I’m in, which for March was “A Historical Event”.

Bibliodame, 2023-03-06

I would like to see more puzzles by Polish artist Jacek Yerka. Unfortunately, I have missed a couple of Yerka puzzles that were available, but are now out of print.

This surrealist image made for a great puzzle, and the cozy reading corner below looks so inviting.

For my puzzle challenge, this is #2, a book (well, quite a few books, actually).

Kindred Spirits, 2023-02-11

Sometimes, I get it wrong when choosing my next puzzle. Turns out, I wasn’t really in the mood for all this green, but I still finished it. It was slow, but at least the quality was superb. I did this for the monthly challenge in my puzzle challenge group. The challenge for February is “friendship”. (Valentine’s Day is called Friend Day in Finland, and it’s more about friendship and less about romantic love.)

[Astronaut], 2023-01-30

Unfortunately, Clementoni hasn’t seen fit to name the puzzles in the Space Collection, but I’m calling this Astronaut. I’m especially fond of 500 piece Clementonis, and I also loved this image, so a great puzzle!

I’m sure that the equipment around the actual space suit is to help navigate and perform whatever tasks he will need to do, but it looks to me like he’s sitting comfortably in a chair 🙂

For my puzzle challenge, this is #27, space. And with that, I’ve already gone through half the list, 15 down, 15 to go! Not bad, considering the challenge runs for the whole year.
