Beach Summer Fun, 2024-07-05

This was fun, although a bit more difficult than I was expecting, at least partly because of the random cut. It was still great fun!

Beach Summer Fun, Eurographics, 1000 pieces. Completed on July 5, 2024.

I did this for the August bonus challenge in my Puzzle Challenge FB group. The challenge was:

Cocktail Lover’s Jigsaw Puzzle, 2024-06-30

This looks like a puzzle that I would love, but it didn’t quite make it. The brand – Ridley’s – is new to me. The pieces are thick and sturdy, and they have a paper backing. Unfortunately, most of the pieces have the basic shape, except for 14 pieces in the same column. Not quite what I mean when I say a like a good mix of piece shapes. Also, the fit wasn’t great. It wasn’t terrible, either, but I would think long and hard before buying another one of these.

Cocktail Lover’s Jigsaw Puzzle, Ridley’s Jigsaw Puzzles, 500 pieces. Completed on June 30, 2024.

The box was tube shaped (which I don’t like), but I did love the request to “please puzzle responsibly” 🙂

Vintage Cook Books, 2024-06-29

Lovely cook book collage. This was so much fun that I put away the box to make it last a bit longer, but it was still pretty fast.

Vintage Cook Books by Aimee Stewart, Ravensburger, 500 pieces. Completed on June 29, 2024.

I have no idea if any of these books actually exist, but they all looked interesting. Even though I quite like cooking (and I don’t smoke), I can still relate to the cook who prefers a cocktail and a cigarette:

There were also lots of cakes and cookies:

Very enjoyable puzzle!

Snow White, 2024-06-10

This is a puzzle from the Disney Castle Collection, where there’s Disney princess and a cross-section of her castle. I always thought they looked like they would be entertaining puzzles, and recently a Finnish discounter offered them all for a very good price. I ended up ordering all ten of them. Of the ten, I only know two of the princesses (Snow White and Cinderella). Anything by Disney produced after ca. 1980 is most likely unknown to me.

Snow White, Ravensburger, 1000 pieces. Completed on June 10, 2024.

I ended up doing the rooms of the castle last, and I started with the sky.

The fateful mirror:

In the cellar, there was a room with magical potions (I assume), and with shackles and a skeleton in a corner.

Masquerade, 2024-06-07

When I was spreading out the pieces for this one, I was expecting it would be a bit of a chore, but I really liked it. With this kind of image, you do end up looking at the box image quite a lot, but I didn’t mind.

Masquerade by Sven Hartmann, Heye, 1000 pieces. Completed on June 7, 2024.

There are a surprising number of cats in the puzzle, and many masks were worn by cats, not by people:

Here are some of my favourites:

This puzzle was produced in 2016, just around the time that Heye had a bit of a drop in quality. Unfortunately, this puzzle is affected, and the pieces were on the thin side, and the puzzle feels uneven when you run your hand over it. Not too bad, but the current Heye puzzles are better.

The Picnic Party, 2024-06-03

I really enjoyed this, but in a larger piece count, it would have been difficult. In my puzzle group, the monthly bonus challenge for June is:

The monthly challenges are communicated like this, although I think I would prefer words. Anyway, I took it to mean a summery scene.

The Picnic Party by Jack Vettriano, Ravensburger, 500 pieces. Completed on June 3, 2024.

I found the missing piece (in my bed) , but only after I had taken the puzzle apart and marked the box. Oh well.

Car Cemetery, 2024-06-03

This was a new Heye puzzle, from this year, and the artist Lectrr is new to me as well. The puzzle was fun, although I ended up looking at the box more than I was expecting.

Car Cemetery by Lectrr, Heye, 1000 pieces. Completed on June 3, 2024.

The police seems to be looking for a cat:

There something rather alarming in the car crusher:

The ice cream truck looks really good to me right now, we’ve had an unseasonable heat wave in Finland:

Plant Paradise, 2024-05-29

A Heye puzzle from the Exotic Garden series. I’m not usually a fan of vegetation, but this is stylized enough to be interesting. It was OK, but I don’t think I’ll be getting any of the larger puzzles in the series. It was surprisingly challenging, despite the colours.

Plant Paradise by Marie Amalia Bartolini, Heye, 500 pieces. Completed on May 29, 2024.

Map of Europe, 2024-05-16

This vintage Ravensburger with a pre-Soviet collapse map of Europe was less entertaining than I was hoping. First of all, there were a lot of hairs in the box, both human and animal, I think. While I don’t wear a hairnet while puzzling, I do try to remove any hairs before I pass the puzzle on.

Another thing was that the compass was much further north in the puzzle itself than on the box, which caused me to think I must have some false fits somewhere, even though the fit was the usual great Ravensburger quality. It also didn’t help that the two missing pieces were from the sea.

The actual countries was fun, and unsurprisingly, Finland and Germany came together first.
