New Arcade, 2020-05-31

This was the second time I’ve done this puzzle. The first time I found it really difficult, surprisingly so, and I was interested to see if it felt the same way the second time around. Also, I’m going to sell this and needed to check that all the pieces are still there 🙂

It did still feel more difficult than it should be, but not as bad the first time. I guess this is one of those images that I really like, but for some reason, it just isn’t as much fun as a puzzle as it should be. But that’s just me, there are probably lots of people who enjoyed this.

Elephant’s Life, 2020-03-29

Another instalment in Marino Degano’s Life-series. I’ve done the dog, and have the cat still to do.

There were many funny details as usual. Here some young birds are reading about elephants. I know Barbar, there are both books and animations, but I’ve not heard about Elmar before.

Some of the stuff was a bit too gruesome for my taste, though. The hacked off leg was definitely in this category. Perhaps I’m just in the wrong mood.

This was one of the releases from this year, and I was very happy to see that the quality was excellent and the pieces thick. I had a bad experience with a Heye from 2016 recently.

Dry Cleaning, 2020-03-22

A lovely Mordillo image on a ’90s Heye puzzle. It’s less busy than many Modrillo images, but there were enough variations even in the grey areas so that it was pretty easy. Fun!

Banjo, 2020-06-06

This is a new puzzle, very new, actually. Heye marks the production date on the bag, and this was made in April this year. It’s unusual to get puzzles so fast, but when it happens, it’s always from my local puzzle shop Lautapelit.fi in Helsinki. They often have German puzzles available here before even the German online stores do.

Anyway, the puzzle is from the Zozoville series. When the puzzles with adorable monsters first appeared, I wasn’t all that interested, but they’ve grown on me.

This is probably not the easiest of the series. When I first spread out the pieces, they all looked the same, but after staring at them for a while I began to see the differences. There’s enough variation even in the background, it just takes a while to see it.

The quality was excellent again, which is good news. I had a Heye from 2016 with very thin pieces, but they seem to be back to their old, great quality again.

Wildlife, 2020-04-16

This wasn’t all that easy, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. It turned out to be one of my favourite Mordillo images. It’s a classic, the oldest edition I can find is a 2000-piece version from 1991, but this is from 2016 (it said October 2016 on the bag, but on the box, it says copyright 2017).  I managed to lose a piece.

The crocodile was the easiest to pick out the pieces for.

The pieces were thinner than usual for a Heye, but not as bad as this. The fit was excellent, but I prefer a bit thicker pieces. Thankfully, it seems that the Heye releases from this year are back to the excellent, old quality 🙂

Brilliant Blue, 2020-03-21

Another colour collage from the Andrea Tilk Collection. I’ve done the yellow and the red before. They have all been really enjoyable, and not nearly as difficult as you might think with mostly shades of the same colour. The variation in texture is enough to distinguish the different objects, and the puzzles are actually quite easy. This is perhaps the easiest, there is even some text. Loved it!

Goal, 2020-03-25

A wonderful Heye puzzle from 1992. The cut is great, with many variations, and of course, I love the image. This is my official “I miss football”-post. I know there are more important things, especially right now, but I do miss it, both the game itself and the whole experience in the stadium. The Bundesliga is, of course, suspended, and it’s uncertain if it will be possible to play out the season. Even if it is, it will probably be without spectators, to empty stadiums.

I’m in Finland, working from home. When I last left Dortmund on March 3, I thought I would be back in 10 days, but now I know, I won’t be able to get there before the summer. Dortmund and Germany seem very far away right now. Apart from missing football and Germany, I am fine. I’m healthy, and I can do my job from home just fine,  I even quite enjoy it. I hope all of you are also safe and well!

Happy Skiing, 2020-03-21

An old Heye (I think late ’70s or early ’80s), two pieces missing. Featuring the only snow I’ve seen this year. It was a miserable winter in the south of Finland.

Cycle Race, 2020-02-26

I had more fun with this than I had any right to. Blachon is not my favourite artist, and the puzzle is busier than I usually prefer, but somehow I loved every minute 🙂

I love the St Bernard sheep 🙂

img_20200226_032227

The thing that made me most happy with this puzzle was that the quality was great. I had a bad experience, quality-wise, with a Heye from 2016, and this is from 2019. So, perhaps they tried using thinner cardboard for a year but then went back to better quality. I also opened one of the puzzles I bought from this year’s releases, and that’s fine too. I’m so relieved!

The World, 2020-01-31

This one came together unbelievably fast! I expected to finish in March but ended up completing it in January.

The map itself if modern, but it’s done in the style of old maps. For a puzzler, this truly is the best of both worlds, because on old maps it’s often difficult to identify places, and on modern maps, there is far too much water (on old maps the seas are full of ships and monsters).

“Modern World – Antique Map. A tribute to Mapmakers and Seafarers.”

These are images that you might find on old maps.

While relevant, I can’t remember ever seeing the Morse alphabet with flags on a map before. There were also images of various knots, used by sailors, I presume.

I think these are the tools a mapmaker would use.
