At Home in the Country, 2019-05-02

I was inspired by Stacey at My Jigsaw JournalΒ to pull out my only vintage, wooden puzzle. I got it from my grandmother, we found it when I was helping her clear out a closet and I was, of course, very excited.Β  I was probably about 14 at the time. It’s a 300-piece Victory puzzle, with no image on the box. Instead, there’s an explanation why it’s better not to have an image πŸ™‚

It says about 300 pieces. I counted, and there should be 302, but one is missing.

It says 1949 in the bottom right-hand corner, but that would probably be the painting.

I found 16 whimsies – some I don’t know what they are supposed to be.

The fit was very loose, as Stacey found with another Victory puzzle.

Spices, 2019-04-30

This was, predictably, nice and easy. The blue background could have been difficult with another brand, but with Ravensburger, it wasn’t a problem.

I did the bowls first, of course …

… and then started filling in the background. I did the edges last.

The Temple Grounds, 2019-04-29

UPDATE: There are now further details and spoilers about the series on the dedicated page. There is also an individual spoiler page for this puzzle.

My third from the Ravensburger Exit-series (apparently also known as the Escape-series). This time I’ve fallen down a hole in some ancient temple grounds, and need to climb out.

img_20190429_184002

Just the box again, as usual, no spoilers. Compared to the other puzzles in the series, I felt that there were relatively few changes from the image on the box. It’s also the most difficult of the three, with mostly green and brown.

Some colours from butterflies.

Somehow I wasn’t in the mood to work on the mysteries and used the online hints. Actually, the pieces that were part of the final solution were kind of obvious even while working on the puzzle. Also, the reality didn’t quite match the solution provided in the closed envelope – some of the printing looks to be wrong.

img_20190429_184941

Again, there was a pile of these extra pieces. I’ve kept them for all the puzzles, and they could be useful for someone who wants to make replacements for lost pieces. That’s definitely not me, though πŸ™‚

With the two previousΒ Exit-puzzles, I’ve noticed that the old posts get some traffic, and I even had a question about one of the puzzles, so I’m considering doing a separate spoiler page for the series, with photos of the completed puzzles.

Firmly on the Ground, 2019-04-18

A puzzle from the Kaj Stenvall Collection, with a cranky duck in a boat. This has only pieces of the basic shape with two tabs opposite, and it makes a big difference. There are a lot more candidates for each spot when you can’t rule any pieces out on basic shape. While the quality is pretty good, I had some cases where I had placed a piece wrong, and only noticed after I couldn’t get any further. It was possible to identify the wrongly placed pieces, but I had to look really closely.

The trees were the most difficult part.

Here’s a close-up of the duck from the box. You can see the texture of the canvas, which is a great help while puzzling. You can’t see it in the really dark parts, though.

One Dot at a Time, 2019-04-15

I spent an entire day and much of the night on this, and managed to finish it!

The German title of the puzzle is “Colourful stones”, without that I probably wouldn’t have worked out what’s actually depicted πŸ™‚

The bits with green and blue were the most difficult.

Pirates of the Caribbean, 2019-04-08

I’ve seen at least two of these films, although I’m not a huge fan. This took longer than expected, there were a lot of dark pieces. Bought used but complete, one piece was damaged (the image layer missing from one tab). Actually, the damage almost looks like an order pinned to Norrington’s uniform.

I usually keep my beverages away from my puzzles (I’ve had several accidents over the years), but I just bought this glass mug with a lid and a straw. Should limit the damage πŸ™‚

I started with the faces.

Bavaria, 2019-04-04

Finally finished Bavaria. Dortmund is playing Bayern Munich today in a huge game that could decide the championship, so I’m hoping they will also finish Bavaria later today πŸ™‚

… as well as more traditional vehicles.

In the bottom right-hand corner there’s a Wagner opera in progress.

The opera set includes a model of the castle πŸ™‚

img_20190405_073153

A great puzzle, the mountains and vegetation were the hardest parts.

The Attic, 2019-03-25

This is one of the Ravensburger 500-piece puzzles with XL pieces. The puzzle is as big as a 1000 piece puzzle, even though it’s only 500 pieces. I only have two of these, and I’m definitely keeping them – they will probably be the last puzzles I’ll be able to work on when I’m really old πŸ™‚

Yummy Yellow, 2019-03-18

Got this for 0,50 € from a recycling centre, and it turned out to be complete! Not all that easy, but yellow is my favourite colour πŸ™‚ I’ve done another collage by the same artist, completed in April 2008, but no photo of that one. These are great examples of images that are entertaining puzzles that I would never like on my wall.
