Artist’s Studio, 2021-08-15

I finished the Artist’s Studio Escape / Exit puzzle. I won’t post a photo of the finished puzzle here, but you can find it along with thoughts on the puzzles within the puzzle on my dedicated spoiler page.

As I expected, this turned out to be perhaps the most enjoyable jigsaw puzzling experience of all the Exit puzzles. Until the very end when I had to do the edges, that is. The puzzle had a rating of 5/5 difficulty for the puzzles within the puzzle, and I couldn’t solve all of them even with the help provided by Ravensburger.

The backstory was again a bit different in English than in German, but only in small details this time. The story is that in the early 16th Century, your master has been arrested, and you rush to the studio to do away with any incriminating evidence (it’s not entirely clear of what, but of some kind of illicit art). The final solution was quite funny, and I didn’t quite see it coming (usually it’s quite easy), so I really enjoyed that, too. All in all, one of the best Exit-puzzles, I would say.

The Laboratory, 2021-07-24

I did the Laboratory Escape Puzzle. You can see a photo pf the finished puzzle here, but I won’t show it in the post. This time, there weren’t many differences betwee the box and the finished puzzle. Unlike most puzzles in the series, this isn’t too dark, which is nice. Since it was only 368 pieces it wasn’t that much of a challenge as a jigsaw puzzle.

The backstory in the booklet is different in English than in the other languages. In the English backstory, you’re working late trying to develop a vaccine against a deadly disease (very topical), and accidentally inject yourself with the disease. Now you really need to finalize the vaccine to use it on yourself.

Apart from the last bit where you want a vaccine although you’re already infected (I don’t think a vaccine helps at that point), this is a pretty good backstory, as Escape / Exit puzzle backstories go. The same can’t be said for the story provided in German, French and Italian, and probably all other languages except English. In this story, you’re seriously ill, but you don’t trust doctors (!). Except, there’s this one slightly weird doctor you knew years ago, who cooked up his own medicines. This is the only doctor you can imagine entrusting your life to. Unfortunately, his phone number is no longer active, so of course, you pop over to his laboratory, where the doctor is nowhere to be found. The only logical solution is to develop the medicine you need yourself (WTF!). There’s even a handy book to help you:

Virology for dummies

This is the kind of nonsensical backstory I’ve come to expect, but apparently, the English translator couldn’t handle the idiocy anymore, and decided to make up his own story :-D.

There were six puzzles to solve, and I couldn’t do any of them without the Ravensburger hints, and the last one I didn’t understand at all.

A Wasgij and New Exit Puzzles

I finished the Wasgij-puzzle Uproar at the Vets. I won’t post the whole image here, but you can see it by clicking here.

A bird with tooth ache?

I also finally received two new Exit Puzzles that I ordered back in January:

They were originally both listed as 759-piece puzzles, but sadly, the Laboratory is only 368 pieces. The artist’s studio has the full 5 difficulty points for the clues, so I don’t expect I’ll be able to understand all of them 😊

New Exit Puzzles

The latest three Exit-Puzzles are branded as Exit Puzzle Kids, but the only real difference to the previous puzzles that I can see is that the stories are a bit tamer, in the previous puzzles they almost always involved imminent danger of death. I still find the puzzles really enjoyable, but I couldn’t be be bothered to spend much time on the mysteries. While I do like the big pieces, I still prefer the 759-piece Exit-puzzles.

So far, I’ve gotten all of the Exit-puzzles that are available (14 puzzles), but I think I’m going to cut down a bit now, and only get the ones where I really love the image. My favourite of these three was the amusement park, and the backstory actually sounded like a promising start to a horror movie 🙂 I finished all three puzzle in one day.

I’ve added links to photos of the finished puzzles to my spoiler page for the series.

Escape / Exit Update

I’ve now finished the two 368-piece Exit-puzzles, Greenhouse and the Toy Factory. Turns out, they are exactly like the 759-piece ones …

… only with really big pieces. Below my car key as a measuring stick.

I actually preferred the larger piece count, there was more puzzling and less math in those. I also decided I won’t be making indicidual spoiler pages for these puzzles, but I’m still happy to send out photos of the booklet and the solution in the envelope, if someone happened to buy the puzzles used and they’re missing.

The puzzles as such are still nice, and I actually liked the backstories in both of these. The Toy Factory puzzles even featured some demonic toys:

There are actually three more of the 368-piece puzzles already available for preorder, and I will probably be getting those as well.

More Exit Puzzles

I started on my new Exit puzzles! The Unicorn in the middle is the ninth puzzle in the series, and so far the last with 759 pieces. The newest puzzles in the series have only 368 pieces, but the puzzles are as big as the ones with a larger piece count. The pieces must be huge, because the 759-piece puzzles already have pieces that are bigger than normal.

I finished the Unicorn, and there is now a dedicated spoiler page for it. I managed to lose a piece, but otherwise, it was perhaps more enjoyable than I had expected. The backstory is that in an enchanted forest in Ireland, I come across a sad unicorn that has lost its magic after fighting an evil wizard. So, of course, I have to help the unicorn.

I haven’t started on the “smaller” ones yet, but I’ll be very intersted to see if they work the same way as the earlier puzzles in the series, or if there is something new. I can’t really go into details without spoilers 🙂

Another Exit / Escape Update

The first of the new Ravensburger Exit puzzles is now up on German Amazon:

e

It should be available by the end of March, but I’ll be waiting for a better price, because this costs a lot more than I paid for the previous puzzles, AND it’s just 368 pieces (all of the previous ones are 759 pieces).

In the mean time, I redid Dragon Laboratory and Vampire Castle, and those spoiler pages have now been updated with more information about the individual puzzles. For some puzzles, the explanations on the Ravensburger help page were so good that I had nothing to add, but for many puzzles I’ve added my own explanations. In the Vampire castle there was also the first puzzle that I really couldn’t solve. It’s an optical puzzle, where you are supposed to see something when you look at an angle, but I just can’t find the right angle.

I now have detailed help for 4 of the 8 Exit-puzzles, and help on the final solution + photos of the finished puzzles for the rest. Now I’m going to do some other puzzles, but I will get back to the Exit puzzles again at some point!

Exit / Escape Update

An extra post today, outside my normal schedule of Tuesday & Friday.

When I set up my spoiler page for the Exit / Escape series, I decided to leave the puzzles within the puzzle to Ravensburger, since they do provide hints. Even though Ravensburger provides hints and answers, I’ve gotten quite a lot of messages from people who want to know exactly how you are supposed to get to the correct answer. Most questions were about the Observatory and some about the Witches Kitchen, and I used to answer them privately. For these two puzzles I’ve now added explanations of the puzzles within the puzzle, and I also split the single spoiler page so that there is one page for joint issues, and then every puzzle also has its own spoiler page. The single-page was getting too long and difficult to manage, in fact, I found that I had inadvertently copy-pasted in some German text about football. Oops 🙂 The spoiler page for the Witches Kitchen is here and the one for the Observatory is here. I also went back and put in links to the individual spoiler pages for all the puzzles in the series where I had posted about them.

I redid both of these puzzles for this little project:

The Observatory

They are so much fun, and also, my photos weren’t good enough to work out all the details I needed for the puzzles. Actually, I think I’m going to continue redoing this series. These two are the ones that get the most traffic on my blog, and the next two are Vampire Castle and Dragon Laboratory. I think they’re up next 🙂 With at least two puzzles (The Temple Grounds and The Curse of the Wolves) I will try to work from photos if I decide to try to explain the puzzles – they were quite difficult.

It also looks like Ravensburger is getting ready to release some new puzzles in the series, Their help page already has entries for three new puzzles: Unicorn, Green House and Toy Factory. The Toy factory looks especially nice, but I’m getting them all as soon as they are available 🙂

The Forbidden Basement, 2019-11-07

Another instalment in the Exit / Escape-series, and my favourite so far! It was brilliant as a puzzle, and there were more differences between the box and the finished puzzle than usual, and I enjoyed that. The mysteries (7 in this puzzle) were definitely easier than in the other puzzles, I managed to identify and solve two of them without even looking at the clues, and for only one, did I need all the clues.

img_20191107_221706

For the first time ever, the backstory does not put me in mortal danger. An eccentric relative has died, and this time, I’m just looking for his money 🙂 The level indicated on the box is the same as on the Wolves-puzzle, but this was much easier. I loved both the image and the mysteries.

There are further details and spoilers about the series on the dedicated page. There is also an individual spoiler page for this puzzle. Ravensburger has made some changes to their help page, and the links on my spoiler pages have now been updated to reflect those. This puzzle is actually called The Forbidding Basement on the help page, but I’m going with Forbidden, as that’s what it says on the box. On the new page, there’s also a new Exit puzzle, with a unicorn, but if you click on the unicorn, it takes you to the Forbidden Basement. The Unicorn is not available yet at any of my favourite stores, but I expect it will be soon 🙂

The Curse of the Wolves, 2019-10-27

In this Exit/Escape-puzzle, I’m investigating why a group of settlers disappeared. Turns out, they’ve been turned into wolves!

img_20191026_211835

The puzzle itself was quite challenging, only the sky was easy. The mysteries were a lot more difficult than in the previous puzzles, and I couldn’t solve any of them myself. The final solution was, however, quite easy. Since the finished puzzle is different from the image on the box I won’t show it here.  There are further details and spoilers about the series on the dedicated page. There is also an individual spoiler page for this puzzle.
